1. Academic Programmes:

a) Seminar

The Kendr organized a Seminar on the theme, “The Impact of Konknni Literature on our Society,” for the students of Konknni Department of Goa University and College Students on September 27, 2013. Mr. Pundalik Naik, (President of Goa Konkani Akademi), was the Chief Guest and Dr. Priyadarshani Tadkodkar, (Head of the Konknni Department at the Goa University), gave the key note address. Mr. Vincy Quadros, (Delgado Konknni Akademi), Mr. Prakash Parienkar, (Lecturer at the University of Konknni Department of Goa University), and Mr. Silvester Vaz, (Lecturer at St. Xavier’s College, Mapuca), presented the papers. Dr. Tanaji Halankar (Executive Board Member - Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi) chaired the sessions. The Seminar helped to renew our ties with the Konknni Department of the Goa University, Goa Konkani Akademi and the various Colleges in Goa.

b) Konknni Courses for Beginners:

During the course of the year, the TSKK team conducted Konknni Courses for beginners, both Residential and Non Residential, in Romi and Devnagiri scripts. 9 Seminarians from Goregaon Seminary,  Mumbai, namely Anthony Alphonso, Glen D’ Mello, Clifford D’ Souza, Osmand D’ Souza, Savio Lobo, Robin Kinny, Elton Namory, Prashant Padu and Jodman Pereira (April 17 - May 4) and 2 Sisters from Old Goa namely Sr. Neelmani Kujur and Sr. Bhoya did Residential courses (September 16 –October16).  Ms. Casilda Lobo, Mr. Rakesh N. Sharma, Ms. Ana Gracia (Nagoa), Ms. Cyntia Pinto de Andrade (June 10 -  July 12); Mr. David Stanton, Ms. Aventario Jen Pierre, Mr. Thomas Shniter (Porvorim)  and Ms. Asharani Devgune (Mapuca) (July 16 - August 16); Ms. Maya Costa Pinto (Dona Paula) (August 19 - September 2); Mr. Kevin Mascarenhas (Panaji) (August 19 – September 19); Ms. Yvonne Mascarenhas (Porvorim), Mr. Mark Fernandes and Ms. Jennifer Fernandes (Sangolda) (October   21 –November 21 ) availed the Non-Residential courses. 

c) A Fun Tour of Goan History and Culture

TSKK and XCHR jointly organized a five day Educational Camp for school children from November 6 to November 10, 2013, entitled “A Fun Tour of Goan History and Culture,” wherein experts in different fields conducted sessions for the students on Goa’s traditional heritage, History, Geography, Culture, Goan traditional dishes, Goan traditional games, Goan folklore, Goan flora and fauna and a session on developing one’s personality.

d) Publications

The Kendr brought out TSKK Research Bulletin Sôd 17 in December. The bulletin contains the following articles: Fr. Thomas Stephens, A Visionary par excellence (1549 – 1619) by Fr. Kelwin Monteiro S.J., Konknni Khadomboricho Somazacher Probhav by Prof. Prakash Parienkar, Konknni Sahityacho Somazacher Probhav - Kotha, by Mr. Vincy Quadros, Amori Omurpiki – ek Vaycharik Obhyas by Ms. Raksha Chari, Konknni Kovitancho Somazacher Probhav by Prof. Sylvester Vaz and The Medical uses of some Common Garden Trees by Fr. Efraim Gracias S.J.

Gõycheo Kotha, a collection of Goan Folk Tales by the TSKK Team, is in the pipeline, so too is “Romi Lipient Sabdkox – Inglez to Konknni.

2. Cultural Programmes

During the course of the year, TSKK in collaboration with Xavier Centre of Historical Research, conducted cultural activities for school children, namely: 1. Konknni Folk Tales Competition (July 20, 2013) 2. Essay Writing Competition – My Understanding of Diwali (October) 3. Traditional Diwali Lantern Making Competition (October. 5, 2013) and 4. Christmas Programme for the parishioners of Holy Family Church (December. 13, 2013), Porvorim. TSKK collaborated with XCHR in their programmes.

3. TSKK – XCHR Collaboration

In June, the employees of both the Institutions had a Eucharistic celebration to seek God’s blessings on them, their families, their work and on their benefactors. Among the festivities that we celebrated together were, the feast of St. Ignatius of Loyola, Independence Day, Diwali, the feast of St. Francis Xavier, Christmas, etc.

4. Meetings

TSKK had its Managing Committee Meeting on June 13, 2013 and on October 30, 2013 while the General Body Meeting was held on July 12, 2013.  An Extraordinary General Body meeting of TSKK was held on March 22, 2013.  The TSKK Advisory Board met on November 14, 2013.  Various issues pertaining to the Kendr were discussed.

5. TSKK Puroskars

On January 26, 2013, TSKK had its annual Award giving function in its courtyard. Mr. Francis D’ Souza, Deputy Chief Minister of Goa, was the Chief Guest and Fr. Tomas Lobo, the Parish priest of Holy Family Church, Porvorim, was the Guest of Honour. Fr. Ave Maria Afonso and Dr. Jannet Fernandes compered the programme.

(i). Antonio Pereira Konknni Puroskar (APKP):

TSKK honoured Fr. Bernardo Cota, with the prestigious Antonio Pereira Konknni Puroskar (APKP) 2013, for his contribution in music. The award consists of a shawl, memento and a cash of Rs. 25,000/-.

(ii). Konknni Martir Floriano Vaz Puroskar:

The Konknni Martir Floriano Vaz Puroskar 2012 was conferred on Ms. Sharon Fernandes for her book ‘Handbag.’  The award consists of a shawl, memento and cash of Rs. 5, 000/-.

(iii). Jack Sequeira Konknni Puroskar

The Jack Sequeira Konknni Puroskar 2012 was given to Mr. Willy Goes. The award consists of a shawl, memento and cash of Rs. 5, 000/-.

(iv). Maria Afonso Konknni Puroskar

Maria Afonso Konknni Puroskar 2012, instituted by Fr. Ave Maria Afonso, was conferred on Fr. Jose Antonio de Costa. The award consists of a shawl, memento and cash of Rs. 5, 000/-.

(v). Valerio Carvalho Konknni Puroskar, instituted by Mr. Roque Carvalho in 2012, was given to Ms. Brenda Menezes. The award consists of a shawl, memento and cash of Rs. 5, 000/-.

6. TSKK Scholarships:

The Kendr in association with the lovers of Konknni language gives various scholarships to encourage Konknni language among students in schools.


Vincy Quadros Scholarship for the year 2012 was given to Ms. Jacinta J. Cardozo of Mary Immaculate High School, Panjim, Master Dharson J. Fernandes of Loyola High School, Margao and Ms. Eden Fernandes of St. Anne’s Institute, Canacona. The scholarship consists of Rs. 1,000/- each.


João Baptista Scholarship was given to Ms. Sabiya Dukandar and Ms. Taufik Bandekhan of Government High School, Alto Betim. The scholarship consists of Rs. 2,000/- each.

Lourenco & Ubelina de Souza scholarship was given to Ms. Anna Fernandes of Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Panjim. The scholarship consists of              Rs. 2,000/-

We are grateful to all our benefactors who sponsored our cultural activities and also generously contributed to the growth of the Kendr. We deeply mourn the demise of some of our benefactors. May their souls rest in peace.

7. An Appeal

TSKK does not get grants either from the Central Government or from the State Government. It supports itself on its own financial resources and generous donations from our benefactors. Kindly send in your generous contributions to the Kendr. Donations to TSKK are exempt from Income Tax under section 80 G in the Income Tax Act 1961. You can send these either by M.O. / Bank Draft / cheques, in the name of “Thomas Stephens Konknni Kendr”.  God bless you all.
