Dear Benefactors and Well Wishers,


Warm Greetings from the Director, Fr. Apolinario Cardozo S.J., Fr. Jose Silveira S.J., the Administrator and from the Staff of Konknni Kendr. This being the regular annual letter to you all, allow me to place before you a brief report of the academic, cultural and research activities we had during the year 2014. 


1. Academic Programmes


During the course of the year, the TSKK team conducted both Residential and Non - Residential Basic Romi Lipient Konknni Courses for those who had the desire to know the basics of the Konknni language. The text material that was used to teach Konknni was    Fr. Mathew Almeida’s new edition of the book, “Romi Lipient Konknni Kors.”  Those who benefited from the courses include Priests, Religious Sisters and others. Besides the regular monthly courses, the team also conducted courses to those who wanted the course spread over a few months.

On September 20, 2014, the Kendr organised a half day Seminar on the topic, TIATRACHEM SVARUP ANI FUDDAR (The Nature and the Future of Tiatr), for the Konknni students of selected colleges of Bardez and Ilhas and for the M.A. students of the Konknni Department of the Goa University, at the centre. Around 40 students participated in this Seminar. The focus of the Seminar was to make the students get depth knowledge of the Konknni Art form, Tiatr. Students from the invited Colleges accompanied by their Konknni lecturers and the Head of the Konknni Department, participated in the Seminar and benefited much from it. Mr. Shridhar Kamat Bambolkar, a well-known Director, was the Chief Guest. Dr. Prakash Vazrekar, Konknni lecturer, Khandola College, Marcela, gave the keynote address. Three well - known Konknni stalwarts, namely, Mr. Cosma Fernandes, lecturer at MES College, Vasco, presented his views on the topic, Tiatrachem Svarup (The nature of Tiatr), Fr. Luis Gomes, gold medalist in M.A Konknni, from the Goa University, spoke on the topic, Tiatrantli Ostori (The role of women in Tiatr) and Mr. Michael Gracias, a well known writer of tiatrs, presented a paper on the topic, Tiatr, Somazacho Harso, (Tiatr - a mirror of society). The discussion that followed the presentations was well handled by Mr. Tomazinho Cardozo, ex-President of Tiatr Academy, Goa. He and the Speakers clarified the roles of the ‘Kant’ and the ‘Kantaram’ in the tiatrs.  At the start, the Director of the Kendr, Fr. Apolinario Cardozo, S. J. extended a warm welcome to the gathering, whereas Fr. Jose Silveira, the Administrator and also publisher of the Konknni monthly, DOR MHOINEACHI ROTTI, proposed the vote of thanks. Ms. Raksha Chari compered the event. Ms Minakshi Khandolkar along with two university students introduced the paper presenters and other dignitaries of the day.

The Staff of the Kendr has compiled Goan Konknni Proverbs. The material has been sent for editing and the book in Romi and Devnagiri script will be published hopefully in January during the Antonio Pereira Konknni Puroskar ceremony. The Staff has also compiled a Shabdkox in Roman script, English to Konknni and Konknni to English. Both have been sent for editing and we will publish them as soon they are ready. This is the fruit of the work of two years.

Fr. Jose Silveira S.J., the Administrator did the final editing of the following books: “Air Hostess, “Ixtt” and “Samanarth Utram”.  He also wrote on the history and the relevance of the Exposition of St. Francis Xavier in “Gulab” the monthly magazine. The articles will appear in the December, January and February issues, with the title “Sant Fransiskachea Relikanchi Dakounn: Bhavartachi Bhorti. He also wrote the Preface to the Book “Kampinnkar” written by Fr. Luis Gomes. Besides he gave “Samiksha” (literary criticism) on the book “Bandpas” by Menino Almeida, at the monthly Samiksha programme held at the Dalgado Konkani Academy.

2. Publications

In January at the Antonio Pereira Konknni Puroskar ceremony, the book “Gôycheo Kotha,” was released. This book was the fruit of the two competitions on “Goan Story Telling” organised for the school students, during the last two years. This book is special as it is written both in Devnagiri and Roman script.

In December, the Kendr published the 18th edition of Sôd bulletin. The present issue contains the following articles: Goan and Mangalorean Identities – A shared heritage by Alan Machade; Influence of the Portuguese on Konknni Language by Fr. Apolinario Cardozo S.J.; Konknnintlem Bhokti Sahitya by Mrs. Priyadarshani Tadkodkar and 3 Seminar Papers, i.e. Tiatrachem Svarup by Mr. Cosma Fernandes; Tiatrantli Ostori by Fr. Luis Gomes and Tiatr, Somazacho Harso by Michael Gracias.


3. Cultural Activities

The Kendr organised Ontor-Shalla Konknni Kovita Sort - An Inter-School Poetry Recitation Competition for the students of class V and VI on July 23, 2014 in the TSKK Hall so as to create in them love for the language. In all, 19 schools from all over the State participated in this event. Fr. Luis Gomes and Fr. Xavier Estibeiro, Assistant Parish Priests at Milagres Church, Mapusa, were the judges. Cash Prizes to the winners and Educational Gift hampers were given to the participants, besides the certificates of participation.

On December 12, the Kendr will have its traditional Christmas Programme for the parishioners of the Holy Family Parish, Porvorim. The programme includes singing of Christmas Carols in Konknni by the various Zone representatives.


4. Meetings ......


The Kendr had its Managing Committee Meeting on 11 July and the General Body Meeting on 17 July. The TSKK Advisory Board met on 30 October.

Fr. Apolinario Cardozo S.J. represented the Kendr at the “Global Conclave on Konkani Language Planning, organised by Jagotik Konknni Songhotton (JKS) in association with Karnataka Konknni Sahitya Academy, on Aug. 24, 2014, at Kalaangann, Mangalore, There were about 124 delegates from Goa, Kerala, Maharashtra, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Rome, Mangalore, Bangalore, Udupi, Uttara Kannada and Chikmangalur. He also released 3 books in Konknni on behalf of Dalgado Konkani Akademi on November 22, 2014 at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao.


5. Award Giving Ceremony


On January 24, 2014, the Kendr had its annual Antonio Pereira Konknni Puroskar Award giving ceremony. Besides the awards, the Kendr also gave sponsored educational scholarships to encourage students both at high school and higher secondary school levels, love for Konknni language.  Fr. Manuel Gomes, Parish Priest of St. Francis Xavier Church, Borim, was the Chief Guest while the Guest of Honour was Mr. Pandurang Phaldesai. Fr. Ave Maria Afonso and Dr. Janet Fernandes compered the programme.

The prestigious Antonio Pereira Konknni Puroskar (APKP) for the year 2014 was given to Mr. Ramanand Raikar, for his contribution to Konknni in music. The Puroskar consists of a shawl, a citation, a memento and a cash of Rs. 25,000.00

The Konknni Martir Floriano Vaz 2013 Puroskar  was given to Mr. Bonaventure D’ Pietro, for his book ‘Sankoll,’ The Jack Sequeira Konknni 2013 Puroskar  was given to Mr. Michael Gracias. The Maria Afonso Konknni 2013 Puroskar was conferred on Fr. Nevel Gracias. The Valeiro Carvalho Konknni 2013 Puroskar was given to Ms. Selza Lopes. All the above Puroskars consist of a shawl, a citation, a memento and a cash of Rs. 5000/- each.

6. TSKK Scholarships

The Kendr, in association with the lovers of Konknni language, gave various scholarships to students. The following scholarships were awarded.

Vincy Quadros Scholarship. This scholarship is given to Catholic students who scored highest marks in Konknni at the recently conducted Board Examination by the Goa Board of High School and Higher Secondary School. The recipients of these scholarships for the year 2013 were Master Nazareth Lyndon of St. Francis Xavier High School, Moira, and Miss Cleta Fiola Braganza of Lourdes Convent High School, Saligao. The scholarship carries an amount of Rs. 1000/- each.

Helen Baptista Scholarship. This scholarship is given to two students, a boy and a girl from the Government High School, Porvorim, whose mother tongue is neither Konknni nor Marathi, but have taken Konknni as the third Language. The recipients of the scholarships were Master Saquelen Mustak Attar and Miss Diya Vishwakarma. The scholarship amount is Rs. 2000/- each.

Lourenco e Ubelina de Souza Scholarship: This scholarship is given to a deserving student at the Higher Secondary School level who has taken Konknni as a language of study. The recipient of the scholarship for the year 2013 was Miss Grecintha D’ Silva of St. Francis Xavier Higher Secondary School, Siolim. The scholarship amount is Rs. 2000/-

7. Collaborative Activities

Both the institutions, that is, Xavier Centre of Historical Research (XCHR) and we, together conducted both academic and cultural programmes at their respective centres. Besides, the Staff together celebrated various festivities like the feast of St. Ignatius of Loyola, Ganesh Festival, Diwali, Christmas, Feast of St. Francis Xavier, etc. during the year.

 8. Library

TSKK has a good and a well equipped library. At present we have about 16,000 books. A few of the important fragile documents have been digitalized.

9. Gratitude

In July we sent letters to all our benefactors and well wishers tor financial assistance to carry on the research and educational cum cultural activities at the Kendr. I am grateful to those who responded generously to our appeal. God bless you and your families. Do continue to support us with your financial or otherwise help.
